Borrowed: Mystery, Romance and Knowledge, size variable, mixed media, 2009-present.
"Borrowed: Mystery, Romance, and Knowledge", is an ongoing installation of traces and stains found on the pages of local library books. With each genre dictating the personality of its readers by the marks and stains they leave behind, from foodstuffs and nail polish marks, to graffiti and highlighter pens, a range of the local community is revealed.
All text in the final prints except the words affected by the traces of presence is erased, creating an alternate library of information that serves as a clue to the identity of borrowers past. New pages are added to the installation as they are discovered. Reproductions of the pages are set out for visitors to create and take their own "books" from this library or to leave behind for others to read. The installation can be configured in a variety of ways and even has a bound book version.
I was asked to make a "book" version of the book pages for the exhibition, The Page, held in Los Angeles in 2010.
