Land Traces is part of the ongoing Library Botanica collection representing natural items from the “duff” or plant matter of the forest floor. These sticks, leaves, and fallen flowers often go unnoticed and the magic of their regeneration unrecognized. Yet, they are pivotal in maintaining a healthy ecosystem for future generations of plants and humans. I collect and photograph these items using the reverse tonal value, referencing old photographic negatives to give the discarded item a beautiful and mysterious quality of its own. I then return them to the forest floor and what remains are memorial photos representing traces of the land that is constantly rebuilding itself beneath
