In the piece, There is No Turning Back, a black filmy substance appears on several digital photographs that were taken while driving across the western desert. This surface registers as a veil over an optical portal. The images are first obscured by a black frame and then masked further by the translucent black surface. The idea is that something is present, behind the veil but is not immediately recognizable. There is an expectant feeling as if the veil will lift and the entire landscape complete with its inhabitants will be seen, but it is never revealed even by the movement through the series.
